800 Ezo yamazakura trees paint the Tokachi Plain in pink. From the hilltop observatory, enjoy a panoramic sea of blossoms all to yourself—Sakura Rokka Park is known as the perfect “second-chance” cherry blossom spot, blooming just after Obihiro. I reached the park by bike and soaked in the scent of spring on this scenic hike. Here’s how to fully enjoy it.

What is Sakura Rokka Park?
A free-entry cherry blossom park where around 800 Ezo yamazakura trees grow—originally donated by Rokkatei in 2000. Located a 40-minute drive from central Obihiro, this pink hill appears suddenly amidst the Nakashibetsu countryside. From the observatory built in 2015, you can take in sweeping views of the Tokachi Plain and Hidaka Mountains.

Cherry Blossoms Even Before Arrival
After exiting the Obihiro-Hiroo Expressway, you’ll drive through countryside roads lined with canola flowers and white birch trees. Just enter map code <592 389 789*12> into your GPS to get there easily.
360° Panorama from the Observatory
There are nearly 100 wooden steps leading up the hill. At the top, turn around for a stunning view: a sea of cherry blossoms below and the snowcapped Hidaka range in the distance. On windy days, drifting petals flow sideways, making video more stunning than still photos.
Best Spot for Sakura Tunnel Photos
Along the path below the observatory, tree branches reach from both sides to form a natural pink archway. For the best family photos, shoot around 10:30 AM when the backlight makes the petals glow.
How Locals Picnic During Cherry Blossom Season
I brought a “Sakusaku Pie” from Rokkatei in Obihiro and some hot coffee. Since benches are limited, bringing a picnic mat and portable trash bag makes for a more relaxing time.
Q&A: Tips for Your Visit

A: The observatory is open year-round. In autumn, golden larch trees and distant fall foliage create a golden panorama. - Q: Are there shops or toilets?
A: No shops or vending machines inside. Only simple restroom facilities near the parking lot. We recommend using the facilities at Roadside Station Nakashibetsu in advance. - Q: Can I fly a drone?
