The Heavenly Lake “Lake Shikaribetsu” — A World Like Spirited Away

This time, we’d like to introduce a unique gem among Hokkaido’s classic sightseeing spots: Lake Shikaribetsu. The mystical view of sunken railroad tracks beneath the lake has drawn attention for its resemblance to a scene from the Studio Ghibli film “Spirited Away,” captivating many visitors. It’s about 210 km by car from Sapporo and approximately a 3-hour drive (200 km) from New Chitose Airport—truly a “hidden gem.” From Obihiro Station, it takes about 1.5 hours by car. If you’re visiting Tokachi, this is a must-see destination.

Emerald Green Waters Reflecting the Beauty of All Four Seasons

Located in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, Lake Shikaribetsu is a dammed lake formed about 30,000 years ago when a volcanic eruption blocked a river.

Surrounded by primeval forests of fir, spruce, and white birch, the lake is a place that brings the ancient natural world to the present. With a perimeter of 13 km and a maximum depth of about 100 meters, it sits at an elevation of 810 meters, making it the highest-altitude lake in Hokkaido. Because of this, it’s often called the “Lake in the Sky.”

The eastern side of the lake is overlooked by Mt. Tenbo, which has two peaks. Its silhouette and reflection on the lake surface give it the nickname “Lip Mountain,” and it’s considered the symbol of Lake Shikaribetsu.

The surrounding forests are home to a variety of rare wildlife, such as the pika—believed to have survived since the Ice Age—as well as ospreys, white-tailed eagles, black woodpeckers, and herons. These animals are a testament to the untouched natural environment of Lake Shikaribetsu. You may even catch a glimpse of them as you stroll along the lakeside trails.

A Shimmering Emerald Lake That Reflects the Beauty of All Four Seasons

Located in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, Lake Shikaribetsu was formed around 30,000 years ago when volcanic activity dammed a river, creating this natural lake.

Surrounded by untouched forests of fir, spruce, and birch trees, this romantic lake preserves the ancient beauty of nature. It spans 13 km in circumference and reaches a depth of about 100 meters. At 810 meters above sea level, it holds the distinction of being the highest-altitude lake in Hokkaido—earning it the poetic nickname “Lake in the Sky.”

To the east of the lake stands Mount Tenbo (Tenbozan), a twin-peaked mountain often called “Lip Mountain” because of its unique silhouette and how it reflects on the lake’s surface. This iconic peak has become a beloved symbol of Lake Shikaribetsu.

In the surrounding forests, you’ll find rare wildlife that dates back to the Ice Age, including the elusive pika (a small, rabbit-like mammal), ospreys, white-tailed eagles, black woodpeckers, and herons. Their presence is a testament to the pristine state of the area. A leisurely walk along the lakeshore might reward you with a rare encounter with one of these wild residents.

The Submerged Rails of Lake Shikaribetsu: Crystal-Clear Waters and Mystical Views

Another remarkable feature of Lake Shikaribetsu is its outstanding water clarity, said to be among the best in Japan. From the shore, you can often see straight to the lakebed—even at great distances. In spring, the lake reflects the fresh greenery; in summer, lush forests; in autumn, colorful foliage; and in winter, a snow-covered landscape.

One of the most talked-about sights on social media is the “submerged railway tracks” that stretch into the lake. The mysterious scene—rails disappearing beneath the surface—is often compared to a moment straight out of the Studio Ghibli film “Spirited Away.”

In fact, the tracks are used to haul sightseeing boats onto land before the lake freezes over in winter. Still, the view inspires the imagination—as if the tracks lead to a hidden shrine or a sunken city beneath the water’s surface.

Seasonal Activities to Enjoy Year-Round

If you’re heading to Lake Shikaribetsu to see the submerged railway tracks, the best time to visit is between late May and late October, when sightseeing boats are in operation and the lake is not frozen over.

During this season, you can enjoy water activities like boating and canoeing, offering stunning views of the lakebed right from the surface. Paddling across the water by canoe immerses you in the grandeur of the surrounding mountains and offers a chance to spot local wildlife, making for a deeply moving experience in nature.

Local residents also recommend Lake Shikaribetsu’s incredible night skies. On a clear night, a blanket of stars reflects off the lake’s surface, earning it the nickname “Lake Where the Stars Live.” The Shikaribetsu Nature Center offers guided night walks called “Night Watching,” where you explore nature in true darkness with a knowledgeable guide.

And of course, winter brings its own special attractions. When the lake freezes over, a temporary ice village called “Shikaribetsu Kotan” appears for around 60 days. “Kotan” is an Ainu word meaning “village,” and every structure in the village is made entirely of snow and ice from the lake itself.

Highlights include an open-air bath carved from ice, a bar serving drinks in frozen glasses, and even an “ice chapel” where real weddings take place. Whether you’re soaking in the bath or sipping a cocktail, the entire experience feels like stepping into a winter fairytale.

With so much to offer throughout the seasons, Lake Shikaribetsu is a destination that invites you to return again and again.
