Snow and Sun, Grapes and Romance — A Journey to the Tokachi Wine Legacy at Ikeda Wine Castle in the Sky

Perched on a hill overlooking the Tokachi Plain, “Ikeda Wine Castle” is a miracle of the north where grapes ripen through seasons of heavy snow and blazing sun. From vintage wines aging deep underground, to rooftop panoramic views, free tours for families, and exclusive gourmet offerings—this is a sensory journey through a hands-on winery. This complete guide explores the castle’s history, tours, events, and the best ways to enjoy your visit.

The Birth and Revival of the Wine Castle

A Turning Point Sparked by the Tokachi Earthquake

In 1952, Ikeda Town was devastated by the Tokachi offshore earthquake and successive cold damage. At the time, Mayor Kaneho Marutani saw hope in wild grapes and transformed the unused slopes into vineyards. To withstand harsh winters with temperatures dropping to -20°C, unique grape varieties were cultivated, marking the beginning of a town-wide revival project.

Japan’s First Municipal Wine: “Tokachi”

In 1963, the town-run winery “Ikeda Grape and Wine Research Institute” successfully completed its first fermentation. This marked the birth of “Tokachi Wine,” Japan’s first official municipal wine, known for its dry taste with a refreshing acidity. In 1974, the current Wine Castle was completed, modeled after a medieval European fortress, becoming a proud symbol of the town.

A Full Sensory Experience Inside the Castle

Hear the Heartbeat of Wine in the Underground Cellar

On the second basement level, you’ll find a maturation space lined with French oak barrels. Maintained at around 10°C and 70% humidity, the wine continues its quiet respiration. At the newly added barrel-roofed bar (8 meters long), completed in 2024, you can savor limited vintage wines by the glass while soaking in the aroma of the wood.

Aromatic Journey in the Brandy Distillation Room

On the first floor, a traditional Cognac-style pot still is in operation. Visitors can observe brandy production, a tradition since 1964, through a glass window. The space is filled with a rich aroma, and the amber liquid aging in barrels glows warmly under the lights—a perfect photo spot.

A 360-Degree View of the Tokachi Plain

From the rooftop observation plaza, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Hidaka mountain range, the winding Tōbetsu River, and patchwork-like fields. The wide-open view, where sky and land blend together, truly embodies the spirit of this “Sky Winery.”

Enjoy the Grape Castle with the Whole Family

Tasting Delights for Adults and Grape Juice for Kids

At the tasting counter on the first floor, you can try three types of red, white, or sparkling wines starting from ¥1,000. Each comes with cheese or bacon pairings. For drivers or minors, rich grape juice is available. Everyone in the family can raise a glass with their own perfect drink.

Restaurant Dining & Kids’ Meals

The fourth-floor restaurant is known for Ikeda Wagyu steak and Bolognese made with in-house wine. Kids’ plates and hamburg steak are also available, and diners can enjoy meals while gazing at the magnificent Tokachi plains from window-side seats.

Learning About Life in the Grape Exhibition Garden

On the southern slope lies the exhibition vineyard, home to Ikeda’s original grape varieties like “Yamasachi” and “Seimai.” During harvest season in autumn, the air is filled with sweet aromas. Free guided tours by staff teach visitors about the different grape types. The sight of stone buildings and grape vines evokes the opening scene of a fairytale.
